In our rushed and rather over-filled lives, we tend to ask children questions that don't get to the heart of who they are, that never really touch on their deepest values and highest aspirations. We tend to ask things like "How was your day?" or "Did you sleep well?" and get the inevitable "fine" in response.

Here is a practical tool for going beyond 'fine' and for accessing the incredibly complex world inside a child's head. This is a quick, simple, and fun way to connect with a child's values on a daily basis.

About The Values Book
Your child's values are the things that are most important to them, the things that make their little worlds tock.  It is important to know your child's values, because this is where they will both give and receive love, where they will feel heard and respected, and what they are most likely to hear and remember. 

When we truly understand somebody else, by taking time to know what is important to them, then we take our communication to a much deeper level.  This journal is a fun way of implementing this time in your daily family life and a way to keep up to date with the ever-changing people in your home. 

Pick a page at random when sitting down to a meal together.  Find out what your child is thinking about, dreaming about, working towards and excited to pursue.  Get to know what makes them feel scared, what  they need when they feel sad, and which of your rules they think are unfair.  

Share your own embarrassing moments, valued traits, and ideas on what could improve in the world.  Use these questions as a starting point for deeper conversations about life, love, friendship and faith.  

Find out just how deeply your little ones ponder, catch limiting beliefs before they grow, and entice your whole family into considering the greater questions in life. 

And then, make a note in the little speech bubbles of what each family member says so that you can see how your loved ones change and evolve over time.  There are extra pages at the back to capture those longer conversations.
